our mission

ICARA’s mission is to support international collaboration and strengthen research capacity for associations and researchers engaged in advancing research, policy, and practice related to alcohol, tobacco, other substances and addictive behaviours.

What does ICARA do?

ICARA fulfils its mission through the following activities.

Information Exchange & Dissemination

Through our online and in-person events, our website and social media platforms, the Confederation facilitates the professional sharing of information and dissemination of resources relating to current and emerging issues related to alcohol, tobacco and other substances. This includes managing conflicts of interests, promoting research integrity, navigating academic publishing and identifying funding mechanisms. ICARA conducts webinars aimed at the translation of research into practice and policy, and communicate, facilitate, promote and represent alcohol, tobacco, other substances and addictive behaviours research in international fora.

Access to network opportunities for research associations and researchers

ICARA’s networking tool enables researchers to identify potential collaborators outside of their immediate networks. This creates a space for researchers in the Global South to connect and collaborate with researchers in the Global North.

Strengthen research capacity within the Global South

As part of ICARA’s commitment to promote international collaborations, the Confederation also supports strengthening capacity of researchers in the Global South to conduct context-specific research that could inform local policy and practice. ICARA does this through focused webinars and workshops for those interested in fair and equitable partnerships between Global South and Global North researchers.
